Kentucky
Bourbon is America's only native spirit. By law Bourbon must be made in
NEW American white oak barrels. The many years spent aging in new
barrels is one of the reasons Kentucky Bourbon is the best whiskey in the world today. After the golden liquid is removed, the barrels are exported where they are REUSED to make Scotch and Irish whiskey, rum, and tequila. It is our pleasure to share this valuable part of our Kentucky heritage with you. |

| Will
they hold
liquids? Whiskey and
wine barrels make great rain barrels, but they do take a little care.
All of our barrels are made
to hold liquids and have done so for many years. If barrels are allowed to dry out the wood will shrink and the hoops will
loosen. You will have to rehydrate the barrel and tighten up the hoops.
It is important to keep the barrel wet. To tighten up
the hoops tap them in toward the center of the barrel, this will squeeze the
staves together and stop any leaks. Make sure you tap all hoops in. This means
you will have to turn the barrel over and tap the lower hoops in as well. If you want to use them for brewing
or
wine
making we recommend the SELECT
or
NEW barrel. The same goes for our Wine Barrels. THE FLAWED NEW WINE AND FLAWED NEW BOURBON BARRELS ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO HOLD LIQUIDS |
| Each barrel is shipped with a bung in the bung hole. You may have to tap the bung in to tighten it up. We do have new and used bungs for sale. |
*Using
them
for decoration,
displays, storage or trash
containers
Barrels have
other uses besides
holding liquids. If you use the barrels for
decoration, as a
trash receptacle or
for
storage, The barrel will dry out. As the barrel dries out the wood will
shrink and the bottom
hoops may drop off. In order to prevent this we recommend you drive a
self drilling screw into each side of the hoops. We do
this to the half barrel
planters.
Here
you see a picture of a self drilling screw in the barrel hoop. This holds
the hoop in place. We use a Self Drilling Pan Phillips 8-18 x 3/4. You
can get them from any hardware store or home center. They go in very
easy using a regular drill with a Phillips driver bit. It is better to use screws than nails. Using screws allows you to tighten the hoops up if needed, you can't do this if they are nailed in. We can secure the hoops for you for $10.00 per barrel. |
| What do they look like?
Our genuine white oak Kentucky whiskey barrels look GREAT! (they may
need a little cleaning up, they come straight from our distillery
warehouses to you). The
many years spent in
century old warehouses where they react to the change in seasons we
experience here in Kentucky makes for a very beautiful patina on
our vintage barrels.
Our VINTAGE barrels may have been
reused to make other Kentucky whiskies or brandy. Our new and used barrels are
bought by motion
picture studios, prop
departments, and parks. You've seen our barrels in movies, TV programs,
the local amusement park, pub, restaurant, and golf
course. Some Vintage barrels may have a superficial crack in a stave. this does not affect the barrel in any way (a stave is the oak slats that makeup the body of the barrel). Our SELECT
barrels have been used only once to make Bourbon, however they
will not look like new barrels, they have been in the warehouse for
from 4 to 18 years. All whiskey barrels are
charred on the inside. If you want the new looking barrels we suggest you
buy our NEW
barrels. NOTE:
The barrels you receive may not look exactly like the barrels pictured
on our links. Pictures are representative of the barrel grades, no two
barrels will look exactly alike. New Bourbon
barrels can be ordered WITHOUT the charring. NOTE: Our new and used Wine Barrels and Wine Barrel Staves are not charred on the inside, they are lightly toasted. |
| Barrel Finish
Our
barrels are shipped just as they are made, and that is without
a
finish. Because they are used to age the best whiskey in the world they
have to be all natural. Our customers use the barrels for
many
different things. Some make furniture and put finishes on the barrels.
Because there are so many different types of stains and finishes
available we cannot suggest or recommend one over another. Consult your
local lumber yard or home center, they may be able to recommend a
finish for you. Finish as you would any natural wood |
| Is there an odor? These white oak barrels have held Kentucky Bourbon for many years. With the change of seasons the whiskey works itself in and out of the oak giving it its unique flavor and color. Some of our barrels have been reused to make other whiskies or brandy. So our used barrels do have an odor. Here in Kentucky the wonderful Bourbon odor is called "the angles share". We believe it is a very pleasant order and is one of the perks of working with these great barrels. To lessen the odor you can rinse the barrels with hot water. The odor will go away eventually. If you don't want the odor we suggest you order the NEW barrels. |
