Whiskey and wine barrels make great rain barrels, but they do take a little care. All of our barrels are made to hold liquids and have done so for many years. If barrels are allowed to dry out the wood will shrink and the hoops will loosen. You will have to rehydrate the barrel and tighten up the hoops. It is important to keep the barrel wet. To tighten up the hoops tap them in toward the center of the barrel, this will squeeze the staves together and stop any leaks. Make sure you tap all hoops in. This means you will have to turn the barrel over and tap the lower hoops in as well.
Our solid white oak whiskey barrels were made to hold liquids. These barrels were previously used to age world famous Kentucky Bourbon, or other fine Kentucky spirits. The many years spent in century old warehouses where they react to the change in seasons we experience here in Kentucky makes for a very beautiful patina on these vintage barrels. We have turned some of these sturdy barrels into rustic Rain Barrels for your home and garden. These barrels will hold approximately 53 gallons of valuable rain water. They are 36'' tall, 21'' in diameter at the top and bottom, and 24'' in diameter in the middle. They weigh approximately 125 lbs empty, and are held together by 6 double riveted steel hoops. Each of our Kentucky Bourbon Rain Barrels comes with a rugged polyethylene downspout adapter on top, a brass faucet near the bottom, a galvanized overflow pipe on the side near the top, and an extra bung. (see photographs). The downspout adapter fits: 2 1/2 x 3 1/2, or3 x 4 1/2 inch downspout. Residential irrigation can account for 40% of domestic water consumption in a given area. Rain barrels not only store water, they help decrease demand during the summer months. Collection of water from rooftop runoff can provide an ample supply of this free 'soft water' containing no chlorine, lime or calcium. Because it tends to have fewer sediments and dissolved salts than municipal water, rain water is ideal for lots of applications, including vegetable and flower gardens, automobile washing, and cleaning household windows. Saving water in this manner will reduce you demand for treated tap water, and save money by lowering your monthly bill. A typical house has a roof area of 1,200 square feet and four downspouts that will each drain about 300 square feet of roof. That means a rainfall of just 0.3 inches is enough to fill 4 of our 53-gallon Kentucky Bourbon Rain Barrel, one placed under each downspout. A good formula to remember: 1 inch of rain on a 1000 sq ft roof yields 623 gallons of water. Calculate the yield of your roof by multiplying the square footage of your roof by 623 and divide by 1000.

DON'T BUY RAIN BARRELS WITH THE FAUCET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BARREL If you are considering buying from another source or making your own rain barrel, make sure the faucet is near the bottom and not in the middle of the barrel. This will give you more water to use, give you a little more pressure and insure your water does not stagnate. We place the faucet just above the second hoop from the bottom. For those of you who are going to set your barrel on blocks or a stand we can place the faucet lower on the barrel, between the first and second hoop. This will give you even more usable rain water.
IMPORTANT: Before you use a plastic or metal drum as a rain barrel MAKE SURE you know what chemicals were stored in the drum. Many plastic and metal drums have labels warning not to reuse them . These labels can fall off or are removed. Make sure you know what the drums originally contained.
